Description

On their 2018 debut album, we said that Tommy And The Commies were a riotous blast of back-to-the-70s mod punk full of swagger and confidence. And they’ve gone and done it all again on their new EP – four short sharp jets of infectious energy. They are a band indebted to the likes of The Undertones and The Buzzcocks, much in the same way that fellow pop-punks Cyanide Pills are. They drink from the same well and drown in hooks and melodies that spit out over that signature grooving chug of Sharkey and co. Even the slight vocal wobbles in the opening title track are reminiscent of their inspirations. Hero worship it may be, but rollicking mosh-pit-filling fun it definitely is. Impulse Action hits with more of a Johnny Rotten snarl and more of a slice to the jugular, but their brand of hooligan pop is never too far from the surface. When the formula works so well, why change? Power On Standby is back treading that ground laid out by their debut album, bringing in a touch of The Jam and a dash of Protex at the same time. The band are definitely pressing all the right buttons. One Arch Town simplifies the sound even more, riffing over one chord for the much of the verses, which gives the changes, when they naturally come, all the more impact. This EP is a great bridge to what will hopefully soon yield a second full album. Until then, Hurtin’ 4 Certain will more than do. It flies by and leaves you with no choice but to flip it over and start again. – Louder Than War
